The Visalia Karate-Do holds promotions 3 times per year, in April, August, and December. The event is typically preceded by a recital with individual students demonstrating a kata of their choice in front of a large audience of relatives and friends.
However, the first term of the year ended with an Applications recital instead of a Kata recital. Students paired together and pre- sented outstanding demonstrations of bunkai and kumite. The bunkai demonstrations, performed by advanced students, showed the versatility of Goju-Ryu kata by including jujutsu applications from both standing and ground situations. The kumite demonstra- tions, performed by both beginning and advanced students, showed the progression from basic formal one-step Kihon Yakusoku Kumite to advanced Randori Jiyu Kumite. It was a very impressive sight.
