Pareto's Law and the Martial Artist An excerpt from "75 Down Blocks - Refining Karate Technique"

by Rick Clark Pareto's 80/20 law is a statistical discovery I think has considerable relevance in the study of the martial arts. In brief, over 100 years ago, Vilfredo Pareto discovered a relationship that manifests itself repeatedly in larger systems. In its most basic form, Pareto's 80/20 law states you will get 80 percent of your results from 20 percent of your effort. In the business world, for example, it implies you'll get 80 percent of your business from 20 percent of your customers. In the academic world, it implies you'll get probably get 80 percent of your research results from 20 percent of your time spent in the library, or 20 percent of your fieldwork.

Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai Fiftieth Anniversary

by Bill Handren The Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai has been in existence since 1959. It is one of the oldest and largest Goju-Ryu karate organizations in North America. We have more than thirty active schools in the United States, Canada, India, Mexico, Israel, Sri Lanka and Panama, with over a hundred and fifty active dan rank members. The G.K.K. is a not-for-profit organization that teaches traditional karate primarily through public institutions. This allows us to keep student's costs low and make the study of Goju Ryu available to as many as possible. All of the GKK officers donate their time free of charge. Seminar fees only cover the teacher's expenses and none of the students who are unable to pay are ever turned away.Quite an organization isn't it? We will be celebrating our fiftieth anniversary next year and I need your help. I'd like to do a series of articles recounting those years. Anything you write will be appreciated. Please share your experiences with our members

Shihan Yamakura Visits Washington State

by Carol Gittins In May, Shihan Yamakura spent an extended and busy weekend in the Pacific Northwest. After arriving in Seattle late Friday afternoon, he had dinner with Boyd and Carol Gittins. The next morning, Mr. Yamakura traveled to Bellingham to attend a shinsa testing and present seminars at Mr. Duane Sammons’ dojo, the Bellingham Academy of Self Defense. After the promotional testing and seminars, BASD members hosted a potluck dinner so they could spend time socializing with Mr. Yamakura before he returned to Seattle.
