Toledo Annual Tournament

We have reserved Saturday, March 27th for the annual tournament and Sunday, March 28th for an area-wide promotion and seminar (provided that Mr. Yamakura is available).

I was particularly encouraged by the interest that our members showed in the kata tournament at the GKK 50th reunion. I’m hoping that many of our members will desire to get together again at this event and rekindle friendships as they engage in friendly competition.

Are there any suggestions that you have that might create a greater interest for our GKK members? Are there any divisions that we could add etc?

What is Karate-Do: Sport, Self-Defense, or More?

There presently seems to be a schism in the world of traditional karate-do. Some instructors remain firmly committed to teaching karate-do as a means of self-defense while others are committed to promoting karate-do as an international sport. However, what does this emphasis on sport and on self-defense mean for the often quoted karate-do maxim: "The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat but in the perfection of the character of its participants." It is particularly difficult to think of sport karate or self-defense without emphasizing the advantages of victory and the disadvantages of defeat.

Ever since the end of the Second World War, karate has been evolving into an international sport, and in today’s society much of the emphasis of karate-do training is directed toward developing competitive athletes at the national and international levels. This is not surprising given the fact that today’s culture reveres the athlete. The top athletes of today are cultural icons who are extraordinarily well paid. Even some of our international "amateur" athletes often receive financial compensation for their victories in the form of stipends and commercial endorsements.

The Point, Whitey

"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them"...Henry David Thoreau

W

hitey made his living moving furniture.  He was a friend of my dad's who also worked part time on the moving van.  With my father's non-stop diet of Fleischmanns  and Pall Malls, he had developed a body like Woody Allen, but I guess someone had to carry the light stuff.  Whitey was a different story.  He was built like a small linebacker.  His hair was white, almost albino like.  Whitey moved the big things, like refrigerators and freezers.  You could tell he was sort of special among the other movers.  They were all hustling while Whitey would just have a smoke and wait until they had cleared a path to the serious stuff.  He was the Alpha Male of the moving van.
